About the Hamilton Beach 31143 Toaster Oven
This Hamilton Beach has a fairly small footprint and only weighs about 7 pounds. It is made from stainless steel and measures 14.76 in wide x 11.85 in deep x 8.07 in high. Even though is is fairly small, it can still toast 4 small slices of bread and fit in a 9″ pizza. There are 3 knob controls with an easy-turn design. Five functions allow you to bake, broil, keep warm, toast, and also has a bagel setting. The bagel setting allows you to toast the top and warm the bottom of the bagel.
This little oven can take care of many of your basic needs for small cooking tasks. There is no need to use your big oven for a small pizza or to make your morning toast or bagel. This gets the job done quickly and easily. The easy to use controls mean that there is no learning curve. Just plug it in and use it.
Includes oven rack, bake pan and a slide-out crumb tray that makes cleanup simple. The bake pan on this model can be used either on top of the rack for baking or slide under the rack for broiling.
ABOUT THE BLACK & DECKER TROS1000D SPACEMAKER UNDER THE CABINET TOASTER OVEN
Now if space is really tight, then you might want to consider getting a Spacemaker oven that installs right under your upper cabinet. The Black & Decker Spacemaker Toaster Oven does not take up much space and does leave your counters clear.
The best uses for this little oven are for toasting bread slices, bagels, heating pizza slices and other snacks. There is not enough space for the rack to the upper elements to do much cooking. One customer found that when baking muffins it worked better to lower the temperature by 25 degrees lower than the recipe called for. That prevented burning the tops before the rest was done.
Another issue we found was in actually installing the mechanism under the cabinet top. One customer found it pretty easy by ignoring the instructions and making up his own. It took him 5 minutes to install. If you want this oven then his review may help you. You can find it here.
This Spacemaker oven comes with digital controls and an automatic shut off feature. Unlike the countertop Black & Decker toaster ovens, the under the counter Spacemaker oven does not broil foods. It will toast and bake but the broil function was not included in this model. We believe the reason was to make it safer for use under the cabinets. If you basically want something to make good toast and heat up quick snacks then you will likely enjoy having your toaster oven completely off the counter.
WHAT IS THE BEST SMALL TOASTER OVEN FOR YOU?
Since the Black & Decker Spacemaker oven does not include a broil function, if that is important to you in a small oven you may want to consider either the Hamilton Beach or a slightly larger oven like in one of our other posts. The Hamilton Beach is the best small basic oven we found and the Black & Decker Spacemaker Oven saves the most counter space. They both are pretty economical.
As a general rule for most toaster ovens… we like to recommend that you allow at least 4-6” of space on the sides and top when in use because of heat. It is always better to play it safe.
Have you made up your mind yet as to which toaster oven will best fit your needs? Hopefully, you have all the answers to your decision making questions. It is really important to consider and purchase only the model that serves most, if not all, of your cooking needs. A small countertop toaster oven is not a replacement for your big kitchen oven. They can, however, save you time and use much less energy.
Okay then, does one of these models best fit your needs for a small toaster oven?
If you are looking for a countertop oven that is large enough and functional enough to greatly reduce your large oven tasks, then you may want to consider one of these other ovens.
